customising to your needs

Because the Taten Financial DataHub is developed using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), customisations can be easily specified and then developed, according to Taten CEO Jeff Lim.

  • service oriented architecture
  • use of defined protocols
  • three-tiered development approach
  • core modules allow easy customisation
  • reduced time to market

SOA implementations usually rely on a mesh of software services. Services comprise unassociated, loosely coupled units of functionality that are self-contained. Each service implements one action,   Instead of services embedding calls to each other in their source code they use defined protocols that describe how services pass and parse messages, using description metadata.

"At Taten, we work with a three-tiered approach - web server, application server and database server, " says Jeff.  Because we use service oriented architecture, each tier can be replicated and mirrored - making it much easier to customise and scale an application - depending on the client's requirements."

Taten's software framework has been architected into several core modules - server and client.  "As an example, iPublish, our content management system – is designed to be installed on a server and manages core modules like menu rendering, getting news articles - the basic bread and butter of iPublish.

"If a customer requires additional customisation in the form of a different module, if they have an IT department, they can write the modules themselves - And these modules will sit within the application's assets.  Alternatively, Taten can write whatever customised modules are required."

The most important step in any customisation however, is agreeing on the requirements at the start of the project.

"Typically we would get together with the customer and delve into what they are after and why," says Jeff.

"Most of the time they have an idea of what they want but it’s not entirely clear until they start working through the process itself that they start to see what effect a requirement has on their own internal processes and workflows.

"Once it's all clear in the customers mind about how a particular application is going to work, we then draw on our experiences to customise what we've got to produce something that satisfies their requirements in a cost effective manner."
